Cape Town residents now have easier access to essential Home Affairs services following the opening of a new appointment-only office at the City of Cape Town’s Civic Centre.

The new National Department of Home Affairs office, located on the second floor of the Civic Centre on Hertzog Boulevard, is a welcome development for residents who need to apply for or renew important identification and travel documents. It is also the first municipal facility in the country to host a Home Affairs office of this kind.

The opening marks a positive example of cooperation between national and local government, with the City providing the space and Home Affairs implementing the infrastructure required to deliver its services.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis welcomed the move, saying residents will now be able to complete several important administrative tasks at one location, including municipal services, driver’s licence renewals and Home Affairs applications.

For residents, the biggest benefit is convenience. The centrally located Civic Centre is well served by public transport and the appointment-only system is intended to provide a more streamlined experience while reducing pressure on busy Home Affairs offices elsewhere in the city.

Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber said the new office forms part of the department’s broader Home Affairs@home reform programme, which aims to make government services more accessible and modern. He also highlighted the expansion of Smart ID services through partnerships with banks.

Appointments for the Civic Centre office can be made through the Department of Home Affairs’ online booking system.

The new facility is a practical step towards making government services easier to access and is particularly encouraging for Cape Town residents who have long experienced the frustration of lengthy queues and busy Home Affairs offices.
