ACDC Duet Xchange Brings Contemporary Dance to Centre Stage in Cape Town
Cape Town’s contemporary dance scene takes a bold and emotionally charged step forward this May with the arrival of the inaugural ACDC Duet Xchange: The Art of the Duet at The Star Theatre. Taking place over two evenings, the new platform promises an immersive celebration of movement, storytelling and human connection, bringing together some of South Africa’s most compelling choreographers and performers for a showcase designed to resonate far beyond the traditional dance audience.
Among the standout productions is acclaimed choreographer Janine Booysens’ Convergence, a collection of contemporary dance duets exploring themes of attraction, vulnerability, identity and emotional support through deeply expressive movement. Audiences can also expect an exciting programme featuring works such as Speak the Hidden by New World Dance Theatre, Journal by Northern Dance Project and Intimacy of the Skin curated by internationally recognised dancer and choreographer Anderson Carvalho. The second evening expands the artistic offering even further with performances including Unraveled, Salt in My Mouth, Parasite and The Third Day, alongside guest works from Gain Collective and Oorleef Dance Project.
What makes the ACDC Duet Xchange especially significant is its commitment to making contemporary dance more accessible and emotionally engaging for wider audiences. Rather than focusing solely on technical precision, the festival places storytelling, vulnerability and authentic human experience at the centre of its productions. Booysens, who has spent more than 15 years shaping young dancers and contemporary performers, believes dance should move audiences emotionally as much as visually, allowing viewers to recognise themselves within the work on stage. Her collaboration with former student Anderson Carvalho also reflects the festival’s spirit of artistic mentorship and creative evolution within Cape Town’s thriving dance community.
The ACDC Duet Xchange: The Art of the Duet takes place at The Star Theatre, Homecoming Centre, on 22 and 23 May 2026 at 19:00 nightly. Tickets are priced at R150, with proceeds shared directly among participating local artists, creating an opportunity for audiences not only to experience world-class contemporary dance but also to support the sustainability of South African performing arts.
