City Gaming Tournament Connects Young Capetonians Through Digital Play

Young gamers from across Cape Town gathered at community libraries on 15 June as the City’s Smart Cape programme hosted its first youth gaming tournament, creating an opportunity for learners aged 8 to 15 to compete, connect and engage with technology ahead of Youth Day.

The LAN Games tournament took place simultaneously at libraries in Fisantekraal, Hanover Park, Harare, Kuyasa, Kraaifontein and Mamre. Participants competed in a supervised environment equipped with gaming consoles and internet connectivity provided through the Smart Cape initiative.

Speaking after the event, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Alderman Theresa Uys, said the tournament highlighted both the enthusiasm and talent of young participants. “Hosting events like this gaming tournament extends beyond entertainment. It assists the City in bridging the digital divide by introducing youth to technology in an accessible environment where young people can relax and engage with technology,” she said.

The event forms part of the City’s broader efforts to expand digital access and encourage technology engagement among young residents. While gaming was at the centre of the day’s activities, the tournament also introduced participants to digital platforms and community-based technology resources available through local libraries.

Winners received a range of prizes, including wireless Bluetooth headsets, while all participants enjoyed healthy snacks throughout the day. The tournament created a positive and structured setting where young people could develop teamwork, problem-solving and competitive skills while interacting with peers from their communities.

The initiative marks the beginning of a wider rollout of gaming activities through the Smart Cape programme. Following the success of the pilot event, the City plans to expand the initiative to additional communities, further strengthening access to technology and digital opportunities for young Capetonians.
