Franschhoek Literary Festival 2026 Promises Something for Every Reader

The Franschhoek Literary Festival returns from 15 to 17 May 2026, bringing together acclaimed authors, thinkers, storytellers and readers for a vibrant weekend celebrating the power of stories. Set in the heart of the Cape Winelands, the annual event once again offers one of South Africa’s most anticipated cultural weekends.

Known for its lively conversations and welcoming atmosphere, the 2026 programme spans current affairs, fiction, memoir, food, history, art and children’s literature, ensuring there is something for every kind of reader. From crime-fiction fans and cultural commentators to families wanting to inspire young minds, the festival’s broad appeal remains one of its greatest strengths.

This year’s line-up includes respected international writers alongside many of South Africa’s leading literary voices. Several sessions will examine contemporary issues shaping life in South Africa and beyond, with writers including Mike Nicol, Lindiwe Hani, Sheryl James and Nozipho Tshabalala exploring politics, personal history and the country’s evolving social narrative.

Food culture also takes centre stage in “A Seat at the New South African Table”, featuring digital food personalities Fehmz, Lila Lerie and Sinoyolo Sifo. The discussion will explore how South Africans are rediscovering culinary identity through storytelling, recipes and community.

Festival favourite Mike Nicol will also unveil a new crime fiction series, while a hard-hitting “School for Crime” panel brings together investigative journalists Kyle Cowan and Jeff Wicks with legal expert Rebecca Gore to discuss corruption, organised crime and South Africa’s prison system.

A major highlight is the expanded children’s programme on Saturday 16 May. Families can enjoy storytelling, creative workshops and interactive sessions with beloved names such as Refiloe Moahloli, Gcina Mhlophe, Riaan Manser and Alex Latimer.

Beyond the sessions, visitors can browse bookshops, meet authors at signings and enjoy Franschhoek’s celebrated hospitality between talks. With a programme spanning generations, genres and perspectives, the 2026 Franschhoek Literary Festival is set to deliver another memorable weekend in the Winelands.
