Helderberg Nature Reserve Urges Hikers to Match Trails to Their Experience
The City of Cape Town is encouraging visitors to the Helderberg Nature Reserve to carefully assess their fitness levels, hiking experience and the day’s weather before setting out on one of the reserve’s many scenic trails.
The reminder follows recent hiking emergencies in the broader Helderberg area and aims to promote safer outdoor experiences for both residents and visitors exploring one of the city’s most popular nature reserves.
With eight main hiking trails catering to different abilities, the reserve offers everything from gentle walks through shaded forests to demanding mountain routes that require scrambling over rocky terrain. Popular trails such as Sugarbird Walk, Watsonia Trail and Waboom Trail are well suited to regular hikers, while the challenging West Peak and The Dome routes are recommended only for experienced hikers due to their steep ascents, loose rocks and exposed sections.

City officials also advise avoiding high-altitude and exposed trails during poor weather conditions, as rain, wind and extreme temperatures can quickly turn a pleasant hike into a dangerous situation.
The reserve’s lower trails provide a more relaxed experience, winding through indigenous forests, mountain streams and tranquil ponds, making them ideal for families and casual walkers looking to enjoy the area’s rich biodiversity.
Reserve staff regularly inspect the trail network for hazards and may temporarily close sections during severe weather. Visitors can also seek advice from staff or join guided hikes organised by the Friends of the Helderberg Nature Reserve for a more informative outdoor experience.
Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews, reminded visitors that proper preparation remains the key to a safe hike. He encouraged hikers to carry enough water and food, wear suitable footwear and clothing, hike in groups, keep their phones fully charged and save emergency contact numbers before heading into the mountains.
With its spectacular views across False Bay, the Cape Winelands and Table Mountain, the Helderberg Nature Reserve continues to offer some of the Western Cape’s most rewarding hiking experiences. By choosing trails that match their abilities and respecting changing weather conditions, visitors can safely enjoy one of Cape Town’s natural treasures.
