Last Chance to Enjoy Table Mountain’s Local is Lekker Special Before Annual Maintenance Closure

Local residents have just one week left to take advantage of one of the city’s best tourism offers before the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway closes for its annual maintenance programme.

The popular attraction will suspend operations from 27 July to 9 August 2026, with the Cableway expected to reopen on 10 August, weather permitting. Before then, South Africans can still enjoy the Local is Lekker promotion, offering return tickets at R250 for adults and R100 for children aged 4 to 17. The special is available exclusively through online bookings and requires a valid South African ID.

The annual shutdown is a vital part of the Cableway’s commitment to safety and reliability. During the two-week closure, specialist engineering teams carry out comprehensive inspections, testing and preventative maintenance on the cableway system, including the cables, drive machinery, braking systems, electrical equipment, stations and cabins. These detailed checks ensure that the iconic attraction continues to meet stringent international safety standards and delivers a world-class experience for the hundreds of thousands of visitors who travel to Table Mountain each year.

Visitors should note that the closure extends beyond the cable cars themselves. Both the Upper and Lower Stations, including restaurants, retail outlets and restroom facilities, will also be closed throughout the maintenance period. While many hiking routes on Table Mountain will remain accessible, hikers should plan carefully, as there will be no cable car service available for the return journey and all visitors will need to make their own way down the mountain.

For locals, the timing couldn’t be better to enjoy one final winter visit before the shutdown. With fewer crowds, crisp winter air and spectacular views across Cape Town, the Local is Lekker campaign offers exceptional value while celebrating one of South Africa’s most recognisable landmarks.

Anyone planning a visit during the school holidays or at the end of July is encouraged to book soon, as the promotion ends on 26 July, the day before the annual maintenance begins. The Cableway is scheduled to welcome visitors back from 10 August 2026, subject to favourable weather conditions.
