National Gambling Board Launches Verification Portal to Combat Illegal Gambling
The National Gambling Board (NGB) has launched a new online verification portal aimed at helping South Africans identify legally licensed gambling operators, marking a significant step in efforts to curb illegal gambling and strengthen consumer protection.
Announced on 8 April 2026, the platform provides a centralised and regularly updated database of licensed operators across the country. Developed in collaboration with Provincial Licensing Authorities, the portal enables users to verify whether a gambling provider—online or land-based—is authorised to operate within South Africa.
The initiative responds to growing concerns around illegal gambling, particularly from offshore and unregulated platforms that expose consumers to financial loss, fraud and limited recourse in disputes. By offering a reliable verification tool, the NGB aims to improve transparency and encourage participation within regulated environments that meet compliance standards.
According to the Board, the portal will also support broader enforcement efforts by making verified data accessible to law enforcement agencies, tax authorities and financial institutions. The move is expected to enhance oversight within the sector while reinforcing accountability among operators.
The NGB emphasised that the platform is intended to protect the public rather than promote gambling activity, urging users to verify operators before engaging and to report any suspicious or illegal activity through official channels.
As digital gambling continues to expand, the introduction of a national verification system positions South Africa to better manage industry risks while maintaining a regulated environment that supports both consumer safety and economic integrity.
