By Naushad Khan
A trip to Table Mountain remains one of Cape Town’s most iconic experiences, and visitors can now enjoy a range of special offers that make reaching the summit more affordable than ever. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, studying in the city, enjoying retirement, or simply looking for a great local deal, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway has a promotion to suit almost every visitor.
One of the most popular offers is the Local is Lekker Special, available from 1 May to 26 July 2026. South African residents pay just R250 for an adult return ticket and R100 for children aged 4 to 17. Tickets are available only online and must be purchased before the day of your visit. A valid South African ID is required when booking and on arrival. The special cannot be purchased at the ticket office or on the day of travel.
South African senior citizens aged 60 and older can enjoy discounted travel throughout the year. A return ticket costs just R130, valid from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, with discounts available seven days a week both online and at the ticket office upon presentation of a valid South African ID. Pensioners can also enjoy a daily meal special at the Ten67 Eatery, which includes a steak or chicken pie, a slice of milk tart and tea or coffee for R85.
Students have not been forgotten either. Both South African and international students can purchase a return ticket for R320 when presenting a valid student card. The student concession is available throughout the year, making it an attractive option for those wanting to unwind after lectures while enjoying one of the world’s most spectacular panoramic views.
Perhaps the Cableway’s best-known promotion is its Birthday Special. South African citizens can enjoy a free return ticket during their birthday month by presenting a valid South African ID, driver’s licence or birth certificate. The complimentary ticket must be redeemed in person at the Lower Station Ticket Office or Visitor Information Centre and cannot be booked online. Those wanting to skip the queues can purchase a Birthday Fast Track upgrade at the ticket office, subject to the applicable upgrade fee.
Frequent visitors may find excellent value in the Virtual Cable Card, which offers unlimited access for a full year. Valid from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, annual memberships cost R1,700 for adults, R850 for children, R950 for pensioners, while a Fast Track Cable Card is available for R6,000, providing priority access throughout the year.
To take advantage of these promotions, visitors are encouraged to book in advance through the official Table Mountain Aerial Cableway website. Standard online tickets can also be purchased through the official Webtickets booking platform, allowing visitors to avoid ticket office queues and secure preferred visiting times. Operating hours remain weather dependent, and visitors should always check the daily status of the Cableway before travelling. During the winter season, the first cable car departs at 08:30, with the last trip up at 17:00 and the final descent at 18:00.
