Simonsberg Conservancy and Cape Leopard Trust Launch Walk for the Wild at Delheim Wine Estate
Nature lovers, trail enthusiasts and conservation supporters are being invited to take part in Walk for the Wild, a 10km trail run and hike taking place at Delheim Wine Estate on 9 May 2026. The event aims to raise funds for leopard conservation and biodiversity protection in the Stellenbosch region.
Set on the slopes of Simonsberg Mountain, the event combines outdoor adventure with meaningful environmental impact. All proceeds will support efforts to protect leopards and their mountain habitat, one of the Western Cape’s most important ecological landscapes.
The Greater Simonsberg Conservancy works closely with Cape Leopard Trust, a respected conservation body focused on research, education and promoting coexistence between people and wildlife across the province and beyond. Together, the organisations are strengthening long-term conservation initiatives across both private and protected land surrounding Simonsberg.
The conservancy forms part of a broader landscape-driven conservation model where private landowners collaborate to protect endangered Renosterveld and Fynbos ecosystems, while maintaining natural corridors that allow wildlife to move safely across the region.
Research conducted by the Cape Leopard Trust, including large-scale leopard monitoring in the Boland Mountain Complex, has confirmed the continued presence of leopards in the Simonsberg area. Camera trap data gathered on member properties such as Boschendal, Plaisir Wine Estate and Delheim underscores the vital role private land plays in sustaining viable leopard populations.
Beyond research, the Cape Leopard Trust also runs environmental education programmes, snare awareness campaigns and innovative conservation solutions such as predator-proof livestock enclosures through its Mobi-kraal project.
Participants in Walk for the Wild will enjoy exclusive access to Delheim’s Leopard Trail, offering sweeping views across the Stellenbosch valley. Trail runners start at 08h00, while hikers can choose a rolling start between 08h00 and 10h00. There will also be a Best Dressed Leopard competition with prizes for the most creative outfits.
With limited entries available, organisers say the event offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the outdoors while directly contributing to the protection of one of South Africa’s most elusive predators.
